However, if you don’t want to rent a car, Ubers are a very affordable and convenient option for getting between cities and towns, and they’re easy to find. Local buses are also available, but keep in mind that they can get quite hot and less frequent during the summer months.

• Pack Light, But Prepare for Sun: The Algarve has a sunny climate, so pack lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water for outdoor activities. If you plan on hiking, don’t forget sturdy shoes!
• Start Early: Popular spots like Benagil Cave and Ponta da Piedade can get crowded quickly, especially in the summer months. Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds (but keep in mind that even in the summer, water can be very cold in the morning!). 
• Explore Beyond the Beaches: While the Algarve is famous for its stunning beaches, don’t miss the hiking trails, picturesque towns, and the delicious local food. There’s so much more to discover beyond the sand.
• Go to the Beach in the Afternoon for Swimming: The Atlantic Ocean is quite cold in the morning, but the water warms up later in the day. If you want a more comfortable swim, head to the beach in the afternoon when the water is at its warmest.
• Stay Hydrated: The Algarve can get hot, especially during the summer months. Always carry water with you, especially if you’re hiking or spending a lot of time outdoors.

When to Visit Algarve

The best time to visit the Algarve depends on your preferences, but here’s a quick guide:

• Spring (March – May): Spring is a great time to visit for mild weather and fewer crowds. Flowers are in bloom, and the landscape is lush and green. Perfect for hiking and exploring the region at a relaxed pace.

Day 1: Explore Lagos & Ponta da Piedade

Morning: Lagos Old Town & Optional Beach Visit

Day 2: Hike the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail & Explore the Algarve Coast

Morning: Hike the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail

Kick off Day 2 with one of the most breathtaking hikes in the Algarve: The 7 Hanging Valleys Trail. This 6 km (3.7 miles) coastal hike is a true highlight, leading you along rugged cliffs, hidden beaches, and stunning rock formations while offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean at every turn.

Choosing Your Route: Morning vs. Afternoon

There are two ways to do this hike, depending on your schedule:

• Morning Route (Recommended): Start at Praia da Marinha and hike towards Praia do Vale de Centeanes. This direction gives you the best lighting for photos and avoids walking into the strong afternoon sun.
• Afternoon Route: Start at Praia do Vale de Centeanes and head toward Praia da Marinha. If you’re doing the hike later in the day, this option gives you cooler temperatures in the second half of the trek.

Our Recommendation: Start early in the morning from Praia da Marinha to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Hike Overview & Stops Along the Way

Duration: 2-3 hours (one way), depending on your pace.
Difficulty: Moderate – some steep and rocky sections.
What to bring: Sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat, water, and snacks.

Here’s what you’ll see along the way:

• Praia da Marinha: The trail starts at this iconic beach, known for its golden cliffs and natural rock arches. Take some time to admire the double sea arch, one of the most famous natural landmarks in Portugal.
• Benagil Beach & Cave (Viewpoint Only): As you continue, you’ll pass a viewpoint above the famous Benagil Cave, where you can peek inside the hole in the cave’s ceiling. Unfortunately, you can’t access the cave from the trail – you’ll need a boat or kayak for that.
• Praia do Carvalho: A hidden gem along the hike! If you have time, take a small detour to this secluded beach, accessible through a tunnel carved into the cliffs.
• Clifftop Viewpoints: Along the way, you’ll encounter various viewpoints, such as Alfanzina Lighthouse, offering unbeatable ocean views.
• Praia do Vale de Centeanes: The hike ends at this scenic beach, a perfect place to cool off with a swim before heading to your next adventure.

Insider Tip: If you don’t feel like hiking the full 6 km, you can do just a portion of the trail and then return. The section between Praia da Marinha and Benagil is the most spectacular if you’re short on time!

Lunch: Mar à Vista in Carvoeiro

After your hike along the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail, it’s time to refuel with some fresh seafood. Head to Mar à Vista in Carvoeiro, a cozy, ocean-view restaurant offering some of the best local seafood. Their grilled fish and octopus salad are must-tries!

How to Get There:

• By car: A 10-minute drive from Praia do Vale de Centeanes.
• By Uber: Quick and cheap, with rides between Algarve towns costing as little as €5-10.

Afternoon: Praia da Marinha or Algar Seco

For the afternoon, you have two great options, depending on whether you want to relax on the beach or keep exploring:

• Beach Option: Praia da Marinha
  • If you’re craving a beach break, head back to Praia da Marinha.
  • You can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore hidden caves and rock arches.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, paddle over to Benagil Cave for a sneak peek!

• Adventure Option: Algar Seco
  • Located in Carvoeiro, this is a fascinating rock formation with limestone caves and natural pools.
  • Take a short walk along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk to see the dramatic coastline from above.
  • Visit “A Boneca” (The Doll), a cave with two windows that perfectly frame the Atlantic Ocean.

Insider Tip: If you want a more secluded beach experience, skip Praia da Marinha and walk to Praia do Carvalho, a hidden gem accessed through a tunnel carved into the cliffs!

Evening: Sunset in Carvoeiro

Where to Stay for the Night
Since Day 3 is going to be all about Benagil Cave & Faro, we recommend staying near Benagil or Carvoeiro to be close to the action in the morning. 

Day 3: Discover Benagil Cave & Head to Faro

Morning: Benagil Cave & Nearby Beach

On your last day, head to Benagil Beach for a boat or kayak tour to the iconic Benagil Cave. This natural wonder, with its massive ceiling opening letting in beams of sunlight, is one of the most photographed spots in the Algarve and a must-see before leaving.

How to Get There

From Benagil Beach, you can take a guided boat tour (around 1-1.5 hours) or, if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak to explore on your own. If you’re kayaking, keep in mind that the waves can be strong, and entering the cave requires some balance and careful maneuvering.

Insider Tip: The cave can get very crowded, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning. If you’re kayaking, be cautious of the slippery rocks when entering the cave.

Relax at Praia do Carvalho

Before heading to lunch, take some time to unwind at Praia do Carvalho, a hidden gem just a short drive or a 15-minute walk from Benagil. This secluded beach is surrounded by towering cliffs and has a secret tunnel entrance, adding to its charm. The waters are crystal-clear, perfect for a refreshing swim before lunch.

Insider Tip: Bring a snorkel! The waters here are calm and full of marine life, making it a great spot for a quick snorkeling session.

Lunch: O Pescador Benagil

After your morning adventure, consider dining at O Pescador Benagil, a restaurant renowned for its fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavors. Overlooking the picturesque Benagil cove, it offers a charming and inviting atmosphere. 

Alternative Option: O Algar

Another excellent choice is O Algar, a family-run restaurant near Benagil Beach. Known for its beautiful views and friendly service, it serves delicious local seafood, making it a great spot to relax and refuel after your morning activities.

Insider Tip: Both restaurants are popular, especially during peak seasons. To ensure a table, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance.​

If you’re not very hungry, grabbing a quick bite at a local café and saving your appetite for dinner in Faro is also a good option.

Afternoon: Drive to Faro

After lunch, head towards Faro, the capital of the Algarve. The drive takes around 50 minutes, making it an easy and quick trip. You can either take the scenic coastal route for some stunning ocean views or opt for the faster highway if you’re short on time.

If you’re not driving, Ubers are cheap and fast between cities, making them a convenient option.

Evening: Explore Faro’s Old Town & Parks

Once in Faro, take a stroll through its historic Old Town (Cidade Velha), where you’ll find charming cobblestone streets, traditional whitewashed buildings, and impressive landmarks like the Arco da Vila and Carmo Church. 

If you have time, visit Jardim Manuel Bívar, a lovely waterfront park perfect for a relaxing break. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is another great option if you love nature – it’s a stunning lagoon with diverse wildlife and beautiful walking trails.

Insider Tip: For a memorable end to your trip, head to Faro Marina to watch the sunset with a drink in hand. The golden light reflecting off the water is the perfect way to say goodbye to the Algarve.
