- Klimataria (Psiri): We can’t write a food guide without this legend. The slow-cooked lamb with potatoes is iconic. It’s rustic, warm, and smells like heaven.
Our Personal Tip: always order “fava” (split pea dip) and “tyrokafteri” (spicy cheese dip) as starters. They are the litmus test for any good tavern!

- Couleur Locale (Monastiraki): A total hidden gem. You have to walk through a dodgy-looking arcade and take an elevator to find it, but once you’re up there, it’s a cool, youthful crowd with a stunning view that feels like a secret.
Our top pick – Prasini Tenta (Lycabettus Hill). Yes, it requires a bit of a climb, but trust us – this is hands down the best view of Athens. It is incredibly chill, perfect for soaking up the sun away from the crowds, and the food is genuinely nice. A total winner!
Best for Live Music & Ambience
You’re in Greece – you want the music, the wine, and the vibes. Many places claim to have “live music,” but these are the ones that actually do it right.
- Old Ithaki (Plaka): This was our absolute favorite for a special night out. They have live music every single day starting at 19:00. Eating lamb kleftiko while listening to the bouzouki here is a core memory for us.
- Lyra (Plaka): Right near the Acropolis, this spot is magical. They have live music daily from 18:30 (and on weekends usually from 14:30). It’s a bit more upscale, perfect for a romantic dinner.
Our Top Pick: Mironi (Metaxourgeio). This place is a must-go when in Athens. The food is unbelievably tasty, the staff treat you like family, and the music is amazing. It’s an old-school tavern that often turns into a full-blown celebration where everyone ends up singing along.
Pro Tip: Definitely make a reservation if you plan to go during peak hours – it gets packed for a reason!

Sometimes you just need a pita in your hand while you walk to the Parthenon.

- Suvla (Syntagma/Monastiraki): A meat-lover’s dream. They take roasting seriously here. It’s a polished, modern grill house (not a street stand) where the meat is high-quality and cooked perfectly over charcoal. Perfect for a hearty sit-down dinner.

- Tzitzikas & Mermigas (Syntagma): This place changed our lives. You must order the Mastihato (chicken cooked in mastiha gum sauce on a nest of kadaifi pastry). It is unique, sweet, savory, and crunchy all at once.
- Aesopou Fables (Psiri): A cute, polished spot on a pedestrian street. They take classic recipes and make them lighter and prettier. Great for a date night where you want high-quality food without the stiffness of fine dining.
- Karamanlidika (Psiri/Monastiraki): A bucket-list spot. It’s half-deli, half-restaurant. You sit inside a butcher shop surrounded by hanging sausages and eat incredible pastirma pies and fried cheese. An explosion of flavor.
Best for Seafood (That Doesn’t Cost a Fortune)
You don’t need to go all the way to the coast for great fish.
- Atlantikos (Psiri): This is a total hidden gem down a small side street. They serve the freshest small fish (anchovies, sardines) and incredible grilled squid. It’s casual, cheap, and arguably the best restaurant in Athens for seafood lovers on a budget.
- Nissos Seafood Tavern (Psiri/Monastiraki): If you can’t make it to the islands, come here. The name literally means “Island,” and with its blue-and-white decor and tiled floor, it feels like you’ve teleported to Paros. The staff are incredibly warm, and the fresh grilled squid and mussels in wine sauce are some of the best we had in the city center.
🌱 Best for Vegans (Yes, Really!)
Athens has become surprisingly vegan-friendly in the last few years.
- Cookoomela Grill (Exarcheia): Trust me on this – try the mushroom gyro. They marinate the mushrooms to taste exactly like meat. Even my carnivore friends loved it.
- Vegan Beat (Plaka): Perfect for a central lunch. Their vegan moussaka is creamy, rich, and honestly rivals the meat version.
Best for Sweets & Coffee
- Lukumades (Monastiraki): The name says it all. These are Greek donuts (honey balls). Get them traditional with honey and cinnamon, or go wild with chocolate and ice cream.
- Koukouvaya Desserts (Monastiraki/Agia Irini): This place is legendary. It started in Crete and became so famous they finally opened a spot in Athens. You come here for one thing: the “Zoumero”. It’s a moist chocolate cake that arrives swimming in hot chocolate syrup. It’s messy, rich, and absolutely incredible.
- CHOUREAL – Choux & Profiterole (Syntagma/Plaka): If you are a dessert person, this is your temple. Their concept is genius: they make the profiteroles fresh right in front of you. You choose the shell (crispy and baked fresh every hour), the filling (Madagascar vanilla cream or handmade ice cream), and the topping (hot Valrhona chocolate).
Best for Brunch
Athenians take their coffee breaks seriously, and we were surprised by the number of well rated brunch places we found around the city. If you want a slow start to the day, these are the spots we loved:
- The Brunchers (Psiri): This place lives up to its name. It’s located in a beautiful neoclassical building with a glass floor that looks down into a garden. The vibe is super social and buzzy. You have to try the “Eggs Benedict in a Simit” (a sesame bagel-like bread) – it’s a genius Greek twist on a classic. The portions are huge, so come hungry.
- Usurum Brunch & Cocktails (Psiri): This place feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. We loved the lush courtyard – it’s an absolute oasis from the Psiri graffiti and noise. You must try their Tsoureki French Toast (using traditional Greek sweet bread) and the Pistachio Latte. It’s cozy, photogenic, and the food feels genuinely homemade.
- Picky Brunch & Specialty Coffee (Psiri): The name says it all – they are “picky” about quality, especially their coffee (they use top-tier Taf beans). It’s a great spot if you want healthy options like Acai Bowls or Avocado Toast, but let’s be real – we went for the Tiramisu Pancakes. They are stacked high with mascarpone and coffee syrup, and they are worth every calorie.
